Imagine checking your Powerball numbers and realizing you had won $340M.

That’s what happened to John Cheeks, or so he thought.

John was so excited that he called a long-time friend and sent him a picture of the ticket; however, the D.C. Office of Lottery and Gaming denied John his winnings when he went to claim them.

The numbers printed online were incorrect.

Cheeks is suing the Powerball organizations in Washington, D.C.

He’s asking for $340 million, plus extra money for damages and interest. The lottery contractor never removed the incorrect numbers from their website for three days.

The lotteries said he can’t claim the jackpot because the numbers drawn on Jan 7, 2023, don’t match the ones printed.

They also have a disclaimer that mentions the numbers on the site are not the “Final authority.”

Cheeks and his attorney focus on holding the operations and the website accountable for printing incorrect lottery numbers. Cheek’s lawyer claims the mistake has taken an emotional toll on his client as this was a life-changing event.

The odds of winning a Powerball are 1 in 292 million.

I’m sure Mr. Cheeks won’t win the full $340M+ he’s asking, yet it raises the question of how responsible the various organizations are.

The emotional stress from being a life-changing winner to nothing must be severe. How would you handle that if this happened to you? I would likely spiral into depression.

Now, Mr. Cheeks has the added stress of a court case and the possibility that he comes out of this with nothing.
