It’s That Time of the Week My Kids Love Me Again

As a parent, it’s never a great feeling when your kids ignore you.

That’s precisely what happened when Marty finally got a notification that his two young adult children had sent a new text in the group chat.

“They never respond to my texts,” says Marty, who was concerned at first.

He didn’t know what to think. Did one of them get seriously injured? Were they stranded somewhere in the city with no way home?

Marty would soon discover the true nature of these texts, but he was so afraid to check the message.

. . .

After several hours of trying to mustard up the courage to view the texts he received from his children, he felt sick to his stomach.

All sorts of thoughts started going through his head: “When was the last time I heard from them, and what if I can’t help them in their time of need?”

What happened next relieved poor Marty.

He finally looked at the text, which read, “Hey, Dad, can we go for a drive tomorrow and get lunch along the way?”

Marty said he felt like a weight had lifted off his shoulders.

This was not an emergency; it was simply the weekly text for food, as his kids would be hungry the next day.

When Marty texted back, “How come you guys never answered any of my previous texts for the past four days?” the kids went silent again.

. . .

“The story takes a turn for the better,” as Marty describes it.

This has been going on for too long, so he decided to match them at their game of wits rather than directly answer their question.

As the minutes turned to hours, a slight trickle of texts began, asking if they would be going out the next day for that drive and lunch.

The texts got more frantic, and by the evening, Marty’s phone rang; it frightened him.

He looked, and it was from one of his children.

He ignored the call, and the other child immediately tried calling him.

This persisted for 18 more phone calls and 24 more texts before they finally gave up.

The next day, Marty mentioned that he had gone out for lunch alone and showed me the text he had sent to his kids.

It said, “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want done unto you.”

In the photo, he was eating a footlong from Subway, one of their favourite places.

We tried contacting these kids for a comment but have yet to hear back.
